Federal College of Agriculture, Ibadan, Nigeria.

It is a great pleasure for me to congratulate and welcome our fresh and returning students to our great institution-

Federal College of Agriculture, Ibadan and more specifically, Department of General Studies.

Courses in General Studies Department form an integral part of the National Diploma (ND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) courses moderated by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) in Nigeria. All the students enrolled for the National Diploma and Higher National Diploma programmes irrespective of their disciplines are expected to take all the modules in the Use of English, Communication in English, Contemporary Social problems, Health Education, Citizenship and Mathematics.

The Department of General Studies of the College had its accreditation in 2012 during the NBTE accreditation visit to the College, while the department was officially created in September, 2014 during the tenure of Engr. Dr. T. A. Adegbulugbe as the then Acting Provost of the College.

The department has a unique goal of promoting academic excellence through effective planning and efficient teaching of General Studies to broaden the students’ knowledge across the various departments in the College. The department also provides adequate training in English Language with a view to improving students’ oral and communication skills and to reflecting the NBTE recognition of the important role of English Language in global communication and in facilitating academic progress in various scientific disciplines.

General Studies Department is doing its best, and spares no effort in developing its teaching and research programmes to create and expand students’ awareness of their relevance to the development of the social, cultural and natural environment where they will eventually function both locally and internationally.

The department lays much emphasis on effective teaching and learning environment that is capable of preparing and producing highly resourceful and innovative agricultural deplomates with distinguished communication skills to work in various Agricultural domains in Nigeria and abroad.

The department has a team of lecturers who are sufficiently qualified and are consummate professionals working with unflagging energy to achieve the set objectives. This crop of lecturers have been assiduously handling courses in Arts and Humanities, Social and Behavioural Sciences, Mathematics, Physical and Health Education.

The department of General Studies, through its broad-based education provides the opportunity for students to have such an expansive view of their areas of learning that is capable of transforming them to students of creative abilities and academic acuity.

Students are therefore enjoined to avail themselves of different academic activities and other special training programmes offered in the department, as highlighted in this Handbook, to meet the demands of their academic career. Moreover, they must be prepared to always pay the price of diligence, discipline and decorum to fulfil the noble goal set by the stakeholders of this Institution.

I wish you all the very best in your academic career and happy stay in the College.
