SASAKAWA SUPPORTS FCAIB CASSAVA AGROFORESTRY PROJECT

The Federal College of Agriculture, Moor Plantation, Ibadan (FCAIB), has received consultants from the Sasakawa Africa Association for the installation of a solar-powered irrigation system at the College’s cassava agroforestry demonstration site.

The visit is part of the ongoing SIFTAS Project, a cassava agroforestry initiative being implemented at the College to strengthen practical agricultural activities, research and the demonstration of sustainable farming practices.

Speaking during the visit, the Sasakawa Africa Association consultant, Engineer Mustapha Tajudeen, disclosed that the team was at the College to supply and install a solar-powered irrigation system for a one-acre agroforestry test plot.

The equipment supplied includes three 650-watts solar panels, a hose and a pumping machine. The irrigation system is expected to provide a reliable water supply for the demonstration site, support agricultural activities beyond the rainy season and promote year-round farming and practical learning.

In his remarks, the Provost of the College expressed appreciation to the Sasakawa Africa Association for selecting FCAIB as one of the institutions to host the agroforestry project. He also commended members of staff whose efforts have contributed to attracting research projects, grants and development initiatives to the College.

The Provost specifically acknowledged and applauded the Dean of Agricultural Management and Vocational Studies, Dr. Adebayo Adeniran, for his contributions to promoting research activities and creating opportunities for the College through collaborations with development organisations.

He assured the visiting team of the College’s commitment to the proper management and protection of the equipment provided for the project. He also directed relevant officials to work with the Consultant to identify a suitable and secure location for the installation.

The Provost further stressed the importance of commencing the project promptly, noting that the irrigation system would facilitate agricultural activities throughout the year, including periods when students are on vacation.

He expressed gratitude to the Sasakawa Africa Association and its partners for their continued support and assured them that the College would continue to uphold the confidence reposed in the institution.

The Registrar, Mrs. Olanike Popoola; Head of Bursary, Mr. Adeyemi Jaguno; Head of Library, Mrs. M. Osunkoya; Director of Audit, Mr. 'Kunle Karunwi and other members of staff were also present during the visit.

The visit concluded with arrangements for the installation of the solar-powered irrigation system at the designated agroforestry site.
